EVOLUTION; REVOLUTION

Evolution. The amount of trash we generate, that I generate in my own life. I think about how we are choking nature. Is nature passive, being choked and pushed toward mass extinction? Or will it evolve, absorbing our trash, exploiting it, maybe disfigured by it? I painted grasshoppers, gaunt and quirky insects, sewing found materials, soda cans, wire, plastic bottles, into their bodies, imagining them taking it all in, made shiny and beautiful and also grotesque by it.

Revolution. Images of youth putting themselves out there, in protests, in violent and hostile contexts, documented on social media and our newsfeeds. An amplification of their fight? An exposure of their plight? An unmasking? So I cover them with masks, sewn in child-like conviction from found materials, soda cans, wire, plastic bottles, to give them back their anonymity, a protection.

Evolution; Revolution. At some point the two bodies of work, on slow change and fast, came together. Some species of grasshoppers, usually solitary, unleash into destructive plagues of locust swarms when certain crowding conditions align. And when conditions align, mere protests become revolutions, toppling old orders.
